Top Beginner Tips for Nature Photography

My tips for those looking to take great pictures while out hiking and exploring.

Do you love exploring the outdoors but don't know where to start when it comes to capturing the beauty you see? Well don’t worry, the perfect place to start is in your hands right now: your phone. The best thing to do is just start and grow from there. So, I’ve compiled a list of a few tips and tricks for you aspiring nature photographers.

Use the Rule of Thirds

On your iPhone, you have the ability to turn on a grid for your camera. I love using this tool to help me line up the composition of my nature shots. When using the grid, it is best to keep the horizon line directly on either the bottom or top third gridlines.

Get Low to the Ground

I highly recommend going for angles that you wouldn’t normally think of when taking a picture. Some of my best shots have come from when I get down and place my camera close to the ground. Don’t be afraid of looking weird, you never know what magic you can create.

Create Depth in Your Images

When you want to keep every aspect of the frame in focus, you need to keep your depth of field on your camera as wide as possible. You can also create depth by making the thing furthest away from you in focus.

Use Water to Create Reflections

You know that moment when the sunset is reflecting perfectly on the water next to you. That is a picture-perfect moment just waiting to be captured by you. When capturing sunsets, you want to keep your exposure low in order to capture all the light. On an iPhone you can do this by tapping the screen and sliding down on the side of the “exposure box” to bring down the lighting.

Put a Person in the Frame

Adding a subject can change the dynamic of the photo you're taking. If you are hiking with a partner, ask them to step in front of you and pose or to continue walking to add movement to the photo as well.

While you’re taking your nature photos, don’t forget to respect the wildlife around you. It is a privilege to have the ability to capture this wonderful world around us; let’s do our part to keep it around.
